Episode 1: Capture is Key
The 'Innovation Management in the Boardroom' series discusses the strategic and operational challenges of innovation management in a world of rapid technological change. In this first episode of the series we look at knowledge capture and how it underpins any good innovation management program.
Episode 2: Understanding Horizons
The McKinsey 'Three Horizons' innovation model is still a useful planning tool, but no longer reflects how Horizon 1-3 innovation initiatives can be delivered in this current era of rapid technological advancement. With the right innovation management approach, Horizon 3 ideas can be delivered just as rapidly as idea for Horizon 1.
Episode 3: Ideation
Many organisations use design thinking exercises or idea capture platforms to conduct ideation and plan Horizon 1-3 innovation initiatives. But for ideation to be effective across all innovation horizons, it needs to target the right sources and be aligned with corporate strategy.
Episode 4: Competitive Advantage
Understanding the competitive advantage of innovation initiatives in the context of your business informs strategic 'buy v build v partner v invest' decisions, brings additional rigour to your Horizon 1-3 innovation initiatives, and helps to focus the innovation program on areas where you have a natural 'right to play' based on your intellectual capital.
Episode 5: Competitor Awareness
With technology advancing so rapidly, our approach to competitor monitoring and the way in which we interpret the innovative behaviours of competitors needs to fundamentally shift. A failure to do so will leave organisations scrambling to preserve competitive advantage and strategic market position - which in some instances may be fatal.
